He left teaching to serve in the Royal Navy. He spent 6 years on a boat and seven months in New York where he assested Lord Cherwell at the naval reasearch establishment. -
Rejected 21 times
Golding combined his perception of people he learned duning his years of teaching and war with his years in the navy. Even though "lord of the flies" was not his first book, it was the first to be published after being rejected by 21 publishers. -
