Van Gogh and his Forty Paintings
During the winter from 1884-1885, while he was living with his parents in Nuenen, Vincent Van Gogh painted about forty images of peasent heads, which climaxed to is first multifigured composition, "The Potato Eaters". -

Vincent Van Gogh left Paris in February 1888, and moved to the south of France. He wanted to create a community of artists in Arles, but he also was astounded by the beautiful appearance of the Provencal spring. With this, Van Gogh produced fourteen paintings of orchards in less than a month by painting outdoors and varying his style and technique. -
Van Gogh, Gauguin, and his Breakdown
In October in 1888, Gauguin joined Vincent Van Gogh in Arles but suddenly left in late December in the same year. This was due to Van Gogh's breakdown where he cut off part of his left ear with a razor. -

Van Gogh returned from the hospital in January of 1889, and he continued to paint on a portrait of the wife of the postmaster Joseph Roulin. He also painted all the members of the Roulin family as well. -

In May of 1890, Vincent Van Gogh left the asylum and settled in Auvers-sur-Oise, where he was near his brother Theo in Paris. Van Gogh was also under the care of a homeopathic physician and amateur painter named Dr. Paul Gachet. -
The Death of Vincent Van Gogh
On July 27, 1890, Vincent Van Gogh shot himself in the chest in a wheat field and later died two days later.
