    Korean Conflict

    In 1945, Korea was divided into the Soviets and the Americans along the 38th parallel. North Korea wanted the entire county for itself, so then NK invited SK. The US was able to out a half into the invasion around Pusan. And they used the Pusan Perimeter to advance to the Yalu River in the fall of 1950. Then, the Chinese and NK joined together to push the Us naval forces back to the 37th parallel. The US forces attacked one more time and they advanced to the 38th parallel in January 1951.

    The US started to only send supplies to SV. And that started the war against the US and NV. The US set up bomb targets in NV which faced then to a guerrilla war. The US eventually got tired of all the fighting and they decided to take their troops out of Vietnam. And eventually they signed a peace treaty with each other to keep troops out of Vietnam.

    After WW2, the Soviet Union developed nuclear weapons and by 1953, both sides had developed nuclear bombs. Both sides knew how powerful the bombs were but they both wanted to come out on top. It soon turned into a race to see who could match the other side’s new weapons. No one wanted a nuclear war, so in 1969, The US and the Soviet Union began the SALT. This was made to limit the number of nuclear weapons each side could hold. And by 1979, each side agreed.

    NATO and Warsaw Pact

    The NATO (The North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is a military alliance. The US, Canada and most of Western Europe agreed to fight together if they were attacked by the Soviet Union. The US dominated the group. The reason the Warsaw Pact was formed was to improve the military coordination of the Communists countries of Europe. The Soviets were the ones that dominated this group and make sure that no anti-soviet groups were formed, they would invade other members.

    They also both agreed to sign the START in 1991, which limited the number of missiles they could shoot. The Americans wanted to restrain the Soviet Union. They didn't want to do it through a war but through relaxing the tension. This ended when The SU attacked Afghanistan. And in 1968, Britain, France and China signed the NPT, and they agreed to not make anymore nuclear weapons to stop the spread of them.

    Communism became popular in China in the 1950’s. Mao Zedong had victory over the nationalists. He tired both the great leap and the Cultural Revolution but they both failed.

    Communista Cuba And Missile Crisis

    People in Cuba didn't like the dictator, so in the 1950's, Fidel Castro organized an armed rebellion against him. By 1959, they came out with a victory and started to transform the country. With the help of the Soviet Union, Castro nationalized businesses and put most of the land under government control and restricted Cuban's political freedom. The US tired to bring down the communist regime but it ended up failing when Castro's forced captured our invaders.

    Communista Cuba And Missile Crisis

    So, the US put a trade embargo on Cuba which still exists today. In 1962, the SU sent nuclear missiles to Cuba. To try and stop the shipments, the US put up a naval blockade. This caused people to believe that there was going to be a nuclear war over the issue. But, the SU agreed to remove the missiles.

    Soviet Union Falls

    Soon the Soviet Union eco. Couldn’t match up with the Western market. This caused them to not be able to feed their people and made them import grain instead. The new leader tried two new reforms and they were; glasnost and perestroika. Glasnost was to have people talk about the country and their problems and perestroika was the changing of the government and economy. None of these two reforms helped, they just made everything worse and people split into 12 independent nations.

    East Germany built the wall to seal off the East from the West. The wall was made out of concrete and the top was lined with barbed wire. The wall was also watched by patrol guards to make sure no one would try to escape. People would risk their lives to get onto the other side of the wall. The Western side was democratic and was full of prosperity, while the East was communist and had no money. People would jump from buildings and do whatever they could to get onto the Western side.

    In 1980 Hungary started to not like the communist gov. But in 1988, the communist finally started to allow more freedom. Poland heard about this and they wanted a political change, too. The East Germans demanded a change and they got it. And in 1989, they communists gov. fell and Europe was finally free.

    A Soviet-supported Afgan government tired to modernize the nation and that’s how the long war against the SU and Afghanistan started. They wanted to reduce the power of the regional landlords. Both the Afghan and Muslims landlords felt that it threatened the Islamic tradition. When the warlords’ took arms against the gov. the SU moved in. They Us was faced with challenges and began to smuggle weapons into Mujahedin. And the Su started to have issues at home.
