President George H.W. Bush signed the ADA in 1990. This law went into effect on January 26, 1992. This prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in many areas of public life. For example employers may need to provide elevators or ramps to make them accessible to wheelchair users.The ADA is an important milestone in history because it helped raise awareness about the needs and abilities of people with disabilities and helped change the attitudes towards disability in society. -
The United States presidential election was a three way race between incumbent President George H.W. Bush, Democratic nominee Bill Clinton, and independent candidate Ross Periot. Bill Clinton who was the former governor of Arkansas won the election with 270 electoral votes while Bush’s 168 and Perot’s zero. Bill Clinton won 43% of the popular vote. Just nine days in office Bill Clinton came up with, the policy "don't ask, don't tell"(DADT).This allowed gay individuals to serve in the military as long as they were able to keep their sexual orientation private and did not engage in homosexual acts. This is important milestone in history because although gay individuals can now serve in the military they were forced to hide their identities. (Kruse and Zelizer,, 204-206) -
While Bill Clinton was in office he signed the North American Trade Agreement in December 1994, despite the opinions from his own political party. This was a trade agreement between the United States, Canada and Mexico. The main objective of NAFTA was to eliminate barriers to trade and investment between the three countries, thereby promoting economic growth and increasing competitiveness. NAFTA led to the loss of manufacturing jobs in the United States. -
In 1998 a political and personal scandal came into light that involved President Bill Clinton and former White House intern, Monica Lewinsky. Lewinsky worked as an unpaid intern in the White house from 1995 to 1996 and had a sexual relationship with President Clinton that began in November 1995 and ended in early 1997. This affair was uncovered during a separate investigation into another of Clinton’s alleged sexual misconduct, and Lewinsky gave evidence that she had an affair with Clinton.

Shortly after the scandal, the House of Representatives controlled by Republicans voted to impeach Clinton with two articles of impeachment: perjury before a grand jury and obstruction of justice. The senate voted and two-thirds majority was required to convict and remove Clinton from office. Clinton was acquitted by the Senate in February 1999. The outcome was 50 Senators voting "not guilty" on the charge of perjury and 45 Senators voting "not guilty" on the charge of obstruction of justice. -
On September 11th, 2001 a terrorist attack known as 9/11 occurred. No Child left behind is a federal law that President George W Bush put into place. This law was designed to improve the performance of American primary and secondary schools by increasing accountability and providing more flexibility as well as giving parents more choices. This law requires states to give standardized tests in reading in math to all students in grades 3-8 and once in high school. The NCLB Act has helped identify schools with academic achievement and those who need to do more. -
In 2003 George W Bush now focuses on the global disease HIV/AIDS.The PEPFAR was a program that provided funding to support HIV prevention, treatment, care and support programs in more than 50 countries.This was known as the largest commitment by any nation to combat a single disease.The program supports a range of interventions including antiretroviral therapy, HIV testing, prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, and the provision of care and support services for people with HIV. -
A devastating Category 5 hurricane called Hurricane Katrina struck the southeastern United States in 2005. This hurricane caused widespread destruction especially in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana which was inundated with floodwaters with the city’s levee system failing. The storm caused over 1,800 fatalities and was $125 billion in damages. Hurricane Katrina is important to know because it demonstrated the power of natural disasters and the consequences they have on communities. -
In November of 2008, Barack Obama was elected as the 44th President of the United States. He made history as the first African American to be elected as president, winning against his Republican opponent named John McCain. the election had a high voting turn out, with over 131 million people casting ballots. Obama’s campaign emphasized hope, change and unity and his victory was seen as a significant milestone in the countries ongoing struggle for racial equality. -
The Affordable Care Act also known as Obamacare, is a healthcare reform law that was passed in the U.S in 2010. Its purpose was to improve access to affordable healthcare for all Americans, especially those who were uninsured or underinsured. The Affordable Care Act represents a major step towards universal healthcare coverage in the United States and has helped to improve the health and wellbeing of millions of Americans.
