UNIT 6: Immigration Policies

  • The Naturalization Act

    This Act states that you could apply for citizenship if you were a free, white man of good character, who had lived in the US at least two years
  • The Immigration Act

    This Act was made to encourage immigration, by letting them work here
  • The Chinese Exclution Act

    The Chinese Exclution Act states that Chinese people were not allowed to immigrate to the US, because the government thought that Chinese laborers were taking the jobs of locals. This Act was supposed to last for ten years, but additional Act made this Act last until WWII.
  • The New Colossus

    Emma Lazarus writes The New Colossuss from the viewpoint of Statue of Liberty. It is a poem about the Statue of Libery accepting those who wanted to move to America
  • The Geary Act

    Extended the Chinese Exclution Act for ten more years
  • The Scott Act

    The Scott Act extended the Chinese Exclution Act indefinetely.
  • The Magnusen Act

    The Magnusen Act repealed the Chinese Exclution Act (therefore also the Scott Act), so Chinese people were allowed to move to the US.
  • The Secure Fence Act

    This Act was made to gain control over the borders into the US from Mexico, and allows the construction of barriers and the use of techonolgy in the Southern borders
