Fort Sumter is a island in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. It is famous because it was the site of the first shot of the Civil War. The battle lasted thirty-four hours until U.S. Major Robert Anderson and other eighty-six soldiers surrendered the fort on April 13.link text -
