  • Salutary Neglect

    Salutary Neglect
    (1650-1750) While handling buisness of their own, Great Britain left the colonies to themself. With this the colonist were left to fend for themselves; they developed trading skills such as mercantilism, triangular trade, consignment systems. After passing many of their own acts, they started to steer in a self governing way. After going through the Enlightenment, rise of the lower house, and John Locke's ideas, they even created the Bill of Rights. Their 1st form of government.

  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp Act ws passed by the British Parliament on March 22,1765. This act stated that there was a tax on everything that had paper content, but the tax collected was said to protect the colonists from threats of the Appalachian Mountains. The amount of tax wasn't the problem for the coloists, it was how much power the British would think they had over them. There wasn't any action until the Virginia House of Burgesses passed 4 of the Patrick Henry's Stamp Act Resolves. They did not stay.

    The Intolerable Acts
    After the destruction of 342 chests of tea, the British Parliament was furious. The Britsh retalliation were the Coercive Acts, which closed down the Boston Harbor until someone came up, took responsibiity, and compensated the owners of the tea. Even town meetings were banned and a British commander (General Gage) was appointed governor of Massachusetts. The 2nd act was the Quebec Act which appointed a council to make major decisions for the colonies. Robbing the colonists of their freedom.

    1st Continental Congress
    The first Continental Congress was a meeting of delegates set as a reresentative from 12 out of the 13 colonies (excluding Georgia). This meeting took place in Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia on September 5th to October 26th 1774.Although there were much debate and they couldnt seem to agree on anything, by Septemeber, they had agreed on their defence operations against Great Britain, boycott British gods, and demand the repeal off all British Acts since 1763.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Battle of Bunker Hill
    The battle was actually fought on Breed's Hill. On June 17th, 2200 Red Coats under Major General William Howe climbed up the mountain but even with their orders and training, when the Americans let loose musket fire, the Red Coats retreated. With two attempts of realigning themselves and attacking again, they were again thrown back to retreat. The third time, the Red Coats made it up the hill and got the upperhand with close combat even though their numbers declined; then they won the battle.

    Common Sense
    Selling 500,000 copies and at first anonymously, "Common Sense" glorified that America's parent was Europenot just Great Britain specifcally. With this 42 pg. pamplet, it kindled Patriots across the colonies. This is important to US History because it shows one of many ways the colonist's patriotic spirit and the Revolutiony War was created. It's just ne of those stepping stones that helped the colonies turn into America.

    Battle at Saratoga
    The Battle of Saratoga consisted of two battles. The first batte, Sept. 19th, was a British victory and even with his army in a weakend state, the British attacked again at Bemis Height. This battle took place on October 7th, 18 days apart; except at this battle, the Americans won, which gained them financial support from the French allowing the Americans to better their army and supplies. This battle was important as it was a turning point in the Revolutionary War.

    Valley Forge
    After their defeat in Germantown, Washington moved his troops to Schuylkill River approximately 20 miles NW of Philadelphia. The troops went through many trials such as not having anything to keep warm, lack of food, and smallpox. Not everyone even survived, yet with this G.Washington showed his leadership skills as he kept them motivated, alive, and sacrificed his life in attempt to cure them of disease. the troops even got various forms of training from von Steuben. Now on par with Red Coats.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    The point of ths document was to end the Revolutionary War and the five deleates that were supposed to go over to Great Britain were John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, and Henry Laurens. Jefferson didn't make it, but the rest proceeded.The 4 of them left on November 30, 1782, signed the document September 3rd,1783, and approved by Continental Congres by 1784. Even though the French was their ally, the colonists wanted to remain independent.
  • Shay's Rebellion

    Shay's Rebellion
    A series of protests from New Hampshire to South Carolina by farmers that were against debt judgement and local tax enforcement. The most important was in Massachusetts for the leader, Daniel Shays, since it was the worst for farmers. They were in contant jeopardy of losing their farms. The protesting farmers harrassed successful merchants, lawyers, and supporters of the state governemnt. Although they didn't really cause any bodily harm, it caused alarm to policitians and revison of the A.O.C.
