It starts out with the US simply protecting Arab shipping in the Persian guly, but eventually excalates into Iran firing on a US boat causing in the loss of lives. So the US joins the war to prevent Iran from hurting them again or anyone else. -

Clinton approves new sanction against iran and lybia
Clinton put sanctions in place to keep funding from coming from other countries to assist Iran and Lybia. Clinton's reasoning for this was because terrorism is such a big deal and Iran and Lybia are two of terrorism's biggest suporters.
