This institutional proclimation was issued as a war measure during the American civil war in in the 1860's. The result of this proclimation being the release of 3 million of the 4million slaves in america
  • Conections:Emancipation Proclimation

The Emancipation Proclimation was signed by Abraham Lincoln. A white man who during the amerian Civil War, freed three-forthes of the black slaves in america. This act of standing up for the black community is roughly the same as what Atticus did by standing up for Tom Robinson in trial. Both Abraham and Atticus hold responsibility over others, (Atticus being a father and Abraham the father to a Nation), and have a sopisticated view of the world around them seen by the way they avoid racism.
  • Connection - Amendment XV

This Amendment introduced a new improvement to the south. Only to be taken away by the Jim Crow Laws. Atticus treats every African American around him as though none of the Jim Crow laws where ever passed. In other words Atticus Finch treats African-Americans as though this law applies to them even when it does not (legaly).
  • Amendment XV

    Amendment XV
The 15th Amendment, Prohibits the Government from denying any citizen the right to vote. Although this Amendment was ratified, the Jim Crow laws of the south where put in place some of which to deny African-Americans the right to vote after the 15th Amendment. This Amendment was (in a way) re-erected in 1965 with the Voting Rights Act.

  • Connections - World War 1

Many African Americans where killed in the First Worl War and all where effected by it. This war helped open the minds of a minority of white males accepting African-Americans as equal people, such as Atticus Finch. In this war countless black and white soldiers died fighting for the same cause. This uniting them slightly as "fighting for the same goal" often does. Overall this war helped shift the opinions of blacks and slowly induce change.

  • Connection:The Scottsboro Boys

The Scottsboro Boys and what they where charged with is very similar to what Tom Robinson is charged with, the only difference being the number of people involved. The Scottsboro case included frameup, an all-white jury, an attempted lynching, and an angry mob. This event is very similar to the situation in which Tom Robinson resides, and all of these acts where encountered somewhat in the book "To Kill A Mockingbird".

  • Period: to

    Connection:African American Civil Rights Movement

This movement symbolized white people standing up for black people. The Finch's of Maycomb aka. Atticus, Scout, and Jem, face the difficulty of treating the discriminated blacks with equality, due to the Racist and old southern outlooks of the people around them. This movement is the next step when people like Atticus, Scout, and Jem are plentiful enough to make change. Atticus would have contributed to this movement as much as he could.
  • Rosa Parks keeps her seat

    Rosa Parks keeps her seat
Rosa Parks, at the age of 42, refused to give up her seat on public transit to a white male. This small protest of civil rights initiated the following era of civil rights activism.
  • Connection - Rosa Parks keeps her seat

Atticus being civil rights activist of his own and a lawyer, had he been on Rosa Parks's bus, would have somehow involved himself in hopes of sorting the problem out while protecting Rosa Parks. Atticus would have been one of the American's at the time that where behind Rosa Parks and supported her Activism.
  • Lyndon B. Johnson's Voting Rights Act

Lyndon B. Johnson's Voting Rights Act
A piece of legislation prohibiting discrimination in voting. Hereby giving all African-American the right to vote in America. Designed to re-ignite the 15th amendment after Jim Crow Laws, etc.
  • Connection - Voting Rights Act

After the initial resistance this act would have vastly changed many of Maycomb's white citizens outlook on African-Americans and their equality. Scout and Jem Finch, being quite a bit older by 1965, would have had a much more mature reaction to this change. Rather than refering to lynching and mobs in protest, Scout and Jem would accept racial equality with open arms.
  • Jesse Jackson runs for President

  • Connection - Jesse Jackson runs for President

Like Atticus Finch, Jesse Jackson stands up for his beliefs even if the effort is futile. For instance, Jesse Jackson twice ran for president, knowing full well that (at the time) a black man could not become President. This shows that whether or not the people around Atticus and Jesse are ready to accept them and their views or not, they stand by them. Atticus would definitely respect Jesse Jackson.

    Connection:Brian Banks false rape accusation

If Atticus Finch was this man's attorney he would have protected this Brian Bank's future with his life. Atticus preserved from the setting of "To Kill A Mockingbird" would have treated this man's case with just as much sympathy as he would a white man, Unlike most of the other people from Atticus's time period in Maycomb. This sympathy would also be felt by Atticus's children: Scout and Jem Finch, due to their upbringing.
