    In 1820 congress overcame its deadlock and made a compromise. this agreement, called the Missouri Compromise, allowed Missouri to enter the union as a salvery state, while the northern counties of Massachusetts came the free state of Maine.
  • American Civil War

    the civil war was a disagreement between the northern union and the southern confederacy which was caused because of the slavery issue.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scotts slave owner took him to free land, but then his owner happened to die. Dred Scott then sued for his freedom but ended up not succeding. The Dred Scott decision was a wake up call for both congress and the people.
  • john brown raid ( harpers fery)

    john browns raid was an incedent that led to the civil war. john brown, white abolishinist, made a run to end the evils of slavery in the united states, but john and twenty of his followers were captured by the federal amory in harpers ferry, virginia.
  • reconstruction period and the emancipation proclimation.

    the reconstruction period was what lead up to the freedom of slavery and the laws that made them come true. such as, the emancipation proclimation in which freed african americans in slave states.
  • the jim crow laws

    when the reconstruction ended , new laws were passed called the jim crow laws. these laws enforced racial segragtion in which they seperated everyday activities in to "white" and "colored."
  • plessy vs. ferguson decision

    in louisiana, the law states that there will be equal but different colored and white railroad carts. the case started june 7, 1892 when homer plessy bought a first class ticket, which was seated in the white railroad car, plessy was then arrested when hbe then refused to leave his seat.

    to kill a mockingbird was set in the 1930's with jem and scout as the two main characters in the town of maycomb.
  • brown vs. the board of education decision

    the case, brown vs. the board of education decision, statred when the young african american girl wasnt allowed to go to a segragated school. this decision sparked th civil rights in the 1950's which led to th nulification in local laws that enforced segagtion.
  • the montgomery bus boycott

    the boycott started n december 1, when rosa parks violated the racial segragted seating arrangements on the bus. the boycott was supposed to be only for a single day, but african american supporters created a strike until the bus company met their demands.

    to kill a mockingbird was written and published by harper lee in 1960. the story is a reflection onharper lee's experiences growing up.
  • the march on washington

    in 1963, A. Philip Randolph and a quarter million people gathered at lincolns memorial to argue for human rights. the idea bcame from A. Philp Randolph who has been a cival rights activist for decades. MLK also made a speech there.
