    Birth of USA

    In the 1500s, Spain established settlements in Florida, California and the Southwest, and France claimed large territories in the center of the North American continent. But from the 1600s to the birth of the United States in 1776, most immigrants were from northern Europe, and the majority were from England. These people shaped the values and traditions that we still know today.

    In 1815, the population of the United States was 8.4 million.

    Immigration limits.

    In the 1921, USA began to limit immigration, and immigration act in 1924 virtually closed the door. The total number of immigrants admitted per year dropped from as many as a million to only 150.000. In 1965 the immigrant laws began to change, and the yearly totals began to rise again, by the of the century, the United States was admitting more immigrants than all the other industrialized countries combined.
  • First radio speech in Spanish.

    In 2001 Presiden George W. Bush became the first president to give his weekly radio speech in Spanish, in honor of Cinco de Mayo (May 5), a festival celebrating Mexican heritage. Later in the year the White House website began to include Spanish translations of the presidential news.
