During World War 2, the Americans had been developing an atomic bomb in the "Manhattan Project". Since the Japanese had previously bombed Pearl Harbour, the Americans bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in return. As a result, around 200,000 people died.

Igor Sergeievich Gouzenko stole documents from the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa. The documents that he stole proved that there was a Soviet spy ring in Canada. He then went to the Ottawa Journal Building, where he told the story.

The United Nations were established to cooperate on specific matters, which Canada was a part of. It maily carried out the decisions of the security council during the cold war.

Twelve western nations formed NATO, which stands for the Northern Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO unified and strengthened the Western Allies' military in the case of Europe or the Soviet Union invading. Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States were all apart of NATO.

Korea was split between the North and the South, the North being communists, and the South being non-communist. The Americans occupied the South half, which was invaded by North Korea. This is what started the Korean War.

After 3 years of war, a peace treaty was signed in Panmunjom by North and South Korea. The treaty returned Korea to a divided status. Canada contributed by providing transport, supplies and logistics.

The Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czecholosovakia, and Bulgaria signed a treaty which established the Warsaw Pact. It was a mutual defence organisation that put the Soviets in command of the armed forces of the members who joined.

The Vietnam War Started when the U.S. attempted to prevent communism. Canada did not take part in this war.

Izraeli armes pushed into Egypt towards the Suez Canall. In july, French and British joined the Izraeli forces. In the end, the troops were widthdrawn. Lester B Pearson, who later became the Canadian Prime Minister, received a Nobel Peace Prize for using the first United Nations peacekeeping force to handle the situation.

NORAD was a radar developed by Canadians that would detect planes and missiles. This was incase the Soviets decided to nuke the Americans.

The Avro Arrow was a delta-winged interceptor that was designed by Canadians that was supposed to be the RCAF's primary interceptor to meet and destroy soviet bombers. The development was cancelled because it was too expensive and not worth the money after a while.

The Cuban missile crisis lasted 2 weeks. An American spy plane discovered Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba. This posed as a threat to Americans and Canadians. An offer was made by the Americans for the Soviets stating that they wouldn't invade Cuba if the Soviets widthdrew their missiles. If the U.S. got no response, they would have attacked Cuba within 24 hours. Thankfully the offer was accepted

SALT, which stood for Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, was a treaty signed by the Soviets and Americans that limited the weapons that each side could use. It was signed after the Americans found out about a highly advanced nuclear missile that the Soviets were developing which would launch the first strike and prevent the U.S. from launching their missiles. The treaty was mainly signed to prevent nuclear war from breaking out.

The U.S. had to widthdraw from the war. Saigon then fell to the Communists, which ended the war.

The Strategic Defence Initiative (a.k.a Star Wars) was an anti-balistic missile system. This would protect the U.S. and Canada by preventing attacks from other countries.

In a speech, President Ronald Reagan challenged the Soviet Union leader to tear down the Berlin Wall. Citizens had always wanted it torn down and they were constantly damaging it. The government eventually agreed and tore it down.

Ukraine, the Russian Federation, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kasakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Usbekistan announced that they would not be a part of the Soviet Union anymore. This ended the Cold War and brought peace between the U.S. and Russia.
