  • Lee Surrenders,

    Union troops marched into Petersburg, Virginia on April 1, 1865. Being surrounded and outnumbered, Lee surrendered to Grant. This happened at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
  • Lincoln is shot

    Lincoln went to the theater with his wife, and John Wilkes Booth shot him in the back of the head. Lincoln died the next morning.
  • New president

    Following the assassination of President Lincoln, Andrew Johnson -- his vice president -- was sworn into office.
  • End of civil war

    Johnston surrenders to Sherman in North Carolina. Was essentially the end of the civil war
  • Johnson Announces his plans for Reconstruction

    Johnson has a leniency towards the southern states and followed a plan similar to the one that Lincoln announced in 1863. This plan essentially pardoned most of the southerners who were in the confederacy. The only people who were not pardoned were confederate officials and wealthy plantation owners. The date isn't an exact day, it just happened at some point in Summer of 1865.
  • 14th Amendment

    The 14th amendment was an attempt to stop states from creating any restrictions against African Americans. This is the amendment state that says "due process of the law".
  • Military Reconstruction act

    Divided the former confederacy into 5 military districts. Excluded Tennessee which had already signed off on the 14th amendment. This bill was an attempt to make the confederate states sign off on the 14th amendment and give all adult males the right to vote.
  • President Johnson

    The tension between President Johnson and the republicans had increased drastically, and they voted to have him impeached. However, when the vote went to the senate, it feel one vote short of impeaching him.
  • General Grant become President

    After the impeachment threat, President Johnson did not run for reelection in 1868. Instead, general Grant won the position. This meant that the republicans kept control of congress
  • 15th Amendment Ratified

    This amendment stated that a person had the right to vote, no matter their "race, color, or previous condition of servitude"
  • Unified

    By fall of 1870, all former confederate states had rejoined the United States
  • Election Day 1876

    This presidential race was between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel Tilden. On the day of the election, 20 of the electoral votes were disputed. Of those 20, 19 of them were from the 3 Southern states that were controlled by republicans.
  • Compromise of 1877

    The compromise promised to pull all federal troops out of the south in return for the electoral votes needed to let the republicans win the presidential race.
