The Palace of Versailles was the principal royal residence of France from 1682 until the French Revolution in 1789. It was originally a small hunting lodge built by Louis XIII in 1623 but was extensively expanded and redesigned by his son, Louis XIV, who moved the French court and government there in 1682.
