Tim Burton started doing stop motion projects as a child as young as 13, he made them on 8 mm film, and his first short film "The Island of Doctor Igor", which he made in his backyard.

Burton was not a particulary good student and found his interest in art, such as; painting, drawing and watching films. He then attended California Institute of the Arts and studied Character Animation. Henry Selick, one of Burton's fellow classmates from school, worked together in the films "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "James and the Giant Peach."
