  • USSR gets ahead in the space race

In 1961 the U.S.S.R. sends the first man, Yuri A. Gagarin into space. This is a historical moment because it gives the U.S.S.R. a moral boost and it does the opposite for the United States. From this point on America is officially behind in the space race, this causes an even greater hatred of the U.S.S.R. and communism. This shows the glory of the Soviet Union and why the youth of Russia wish to return to this era.
  • Soviets Aid V.C.

The Soviets aid the VC in their fight against the United States. They send 3000 soldiers, equipment, and advisors. The V.C. say that it is hard to over estimate the effect that they had on the conflict. This shows how the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. are always at odds many of the conflicts that they participate in.
  • Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

December 25 1979, Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan. They wanted to topel the current government and put up a new communist government. The militia of Afghanistan could not compete with the overwhelmingly large Soviet army. They were quickly overwhelmed and fled to the hills. There they received support from the U.S. who supplied them with weapons of all sizes. It was pretty much a proxy war fought between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
  • Gorbachev leads the Soviet Union

1985-1991 Mikhail Gorbachev comes to power and decides to restructure the government. He allows more free speech and free media. The old communist leaders especially don’t like this because they believe they will all lose power. Gorbachev gives Soviet controlled countries and republics free elections. This is really good for the U.S. because democracy is spreading to their largest enemy.
  • Soviet Union colapses

The Soviet Union collapsed on december 25 1991. Representatives from 11 of the 12 republics of the U.S.S.R. met to succeed from the Soviet Union because of the radical changes made by Gorbachev. This was a major victory for the U.S. because it marked an end to the cold war. This eliminated the only other country that could rival the military might of the United States of America.

  • Russia's Nuclear policy

Russia declared that they would use Nuclear weapons to defend against any invasions or political influences by other nations.
  • reduction of nuclear weapons

Obama and Dmitry Medvedev (President of Russia) agree to reduce the number of nuclear weapons that both countries possesses. This is a great step towards a lasting peace, but it cannot work because Russia’s nuclear weapons are there last remnants of the greatness of the Soviet Union. Russia depends heavily on their nuclear weapons for protection, so they will not willingly give that up.
  • Russian Cyber Attacks

Russian hackers took control of part of Ukraine's power grid, they intercepted Syrian military communications, and they took control of a blast furnace in a German Steel mill. This is another threat that NATO must meet in order to keep the peace. The worst part about a cyber attack is that it is very hard for NATO to track down who is responsible. They may suspect that it is Russia, but could have really been another nation.
  • Russian youth wants to Return

The youth of Russia yearn for the glory days of the Soviet Union. They wish to be a super power once again. The elderly of Russia tell their children of how Russia was once a super power capable of standing toe to toe with the United States.
  • NATO's response to Russian build up

NATO’s response to Russia’s military build up. The U.S. is increasing its military budget to have the funds to keep an entire brigade in turkey. This is a clear violation of the Russia-NATO agreement because soldiers are in the “realm of the Soviet Union.” It is really shocking and scary that the U.S. would do this even though they had full knowledge that it was a violation. Putin says that the U.S. needs to remove their troops because it is returning the world to a cold war era of action.
  • Current Threat of Russia

Russia is not currently a superpower anymore, but is trying to rebuild its international respect and sphere of influence. They are expanding their military and flying very close to other countries military units. This is a direct challenge to NATO and has the potential to become a much larger conflict. If Russia decides to take their military challenges 1 step farther and invade a small country, NATO will have no choice but to respond.
