  • Early life of Thomas Kuhn

    Thomas Samuel Kuhn was born on July 18, 1922 in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA to a very affluent family three years after his birth his family had another son named Robert. His father was a Samuel Louis Kuhn who was an industrial engineer and investment consultant. Thomas's mother Minette Kuhn was from a wealthy New York family where, she was a freelance editor.

    From kindergarten to fifth grade Thomas when to Lincoln School which was a progressive school that prioritized free thinking over learning facts. When Thomas was seven his father got worried because he Thomas could still not read or write so his father taught him. Later in Kuhn's education he went to a Hessian Hills School where he almost joined a group that swore to never fight for america.

    When Thomas attended Harvard University where he studied physics at first he got a C In his first exam so he went to his professor and asked if he had any future in physics, his professor told him to look at more of the problems and study more and by then end of his freshman year he was getting A's.

    In the years that Kuhn was studding for is BS degree in physics world war 2 started he joined Radio Research Laboratory’s theoretical group which made counter measures for enemy radar.

    After the war was over Kuhn returned to Harvard to get his doctorates in Physics. After he got his degree he became deeply fascinated with philosophy.

    Thomas Kuhn made his concept of the paradigm shift when he was thinking about how Aristotle thought of his idea of motion and that it was a very absurd idea but then Kuhn had the idea that the frame work that Aristotle used was a different frame work that we use today.

    Thomas Kuhn when he was 69 years old retired from being from MIT and lived for ten more years but in the last two years of his life he struggled with cancer. Kuhn died at the age of 73 on June 17, 1996 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
