Thomas Benton Edmonston (1842-1907)

    Thomas Benton Edmonston was born in Haywood County North Carolina. He had two brothers Brazil Brooke Edmonston & Benjamin Franklin Edmonston. All three boys were sons of Ninian Edmonston and Mary Ann Strother.
  • Army Life

    Thmoas B. Edmonston served as a private in the CO I of the 62nd Confederate Regiment of North Carolina. He served in the army from 1861 to 1865.Thomas often wrote his brother during his serivce in the army and talked about all the experiences while traveling from part to part of North Carolina he also wrote his parents about one time he got struck by lighthing.

    Thomas explains how much he has moved and expresseing that he is hoping for a promotion. Also describes the possiblity of swapping into his brothers unit but is declines the ofer so it would pursure it as he would be swapping with a man of questionable character

    Thomas writes both brothers giving his opinion on canidiates for the upcoming NC gubernational elcetion, Also expresses the hope that they all survive the war.

    Thomas writes his brother B.B. conercening the safety of his brother B.F. who he had not heard from for a long time.

    Married Maria Beatty in April of the year 1876, afew years after he got out of the war Maria was a school teacher at Bethel. She was said to be the meanest woemn there. They didnt have kids but had nieces and nephews

    After he had returned from the war and after the death of his mother in 1882 he inheraited the family realstate and soon after his fathers death he had already built a summer resort on the land

    Thomas died on September !8 1907.He is buried in Bethel Community Cemetery in Haywood County,NC
