When he was seven he came to Winona with his family in 1852. He grew up in Winona with one of his childhood friends, Charles Ely, who also joined Company K. He and his friends led a carefree life in the small but growing Upper Mississippi river town. Although his mother was one of the most respected citizens of the town, Charles actively engaged in the pursuit of a Mississippi River boyhood.

Charly Goddard was born in Pennsylvania May 14, 1845 to Catherine and Abner Goddard. He was the only child of nine that survived childhood. Charley’s father died at age 43 in September of 1852, shortly after moving to Winona, Minnesota. He was killed by a mad horse. A ton of bees flew on the horse and kicked Charley's Dad in the head.

Here is some of Charly's childhood His mother, Catherine, re-married in 1854. Catherine and her new husband, Alexander Smith, were not together for long. Alexander disappeared in 1856, presumed drowned in the nearby Mississippi River. Catherine and Alexander had one child, Orrin F Smith. Before the war Charles worked on a farm and in a saw mill.

Here is a video of Charley begging his Mom to go to War. Charley is too young to join the army, so he begs his mom to go. By talking fast his mom lets him go. Antother reason why his mom lets him go is because he will make money and give half of it to her.

Charley lies about his age in the first Minnisota Regiment and becomes a soldier and would later on have soldires heart. -
Charley signs up under age in Fort Snelling, where he is given a musket and a cheap uniform. He trains, and trains, and trains for battle. He hates it, the food was horrible too.

Charley and the other soldires mached to steamboats and the steamboats would take them to the trains. Charley loved this because he was getting fed very well. He thinks very highly of war and loves it. Then Charley sees his first slave and her owner and thinks it is very weird to own a person. He sees the poor whites.

Charley expirences his first battle and realizes it is not so great. It is when the real battle starts. So many people are dying right in front of his eyes.

Charley is in camp.

Charley meets a Rebel when he is wlking along a river. He trades coffee for tabaco. This is the first time Charley meets a Rebel.

Charley has to slaughter horses for sick men. Charley hates it.

Charley is in the war, and he gets hit. He is covered with blood. So they send him to the surgeon to get well. When he gets there, he sees about two hundred dead bodies and limbs. Finally, the surgeon gets to Charley, and he tells Charley that he really is not hit. Someone else got hit, and their blood splattered on you. When Charley is going away the surgeon comes out and said he was cold. He told Charley to stack the dead bodies like bricks to make a shelter. So he did.

Charley gets hit in the shoulder when 2,000-3,000 soldiers are running at him and hit him.

A year after his last battle, he fight again in Gettysburg. The Union has the advantage point and feels bad for the Confederate bacause they are dying constently.

Charley is now 21 and remembers all of the war. He thinks he is too old to get married and raise young ones. He is not too old in years but from knowing too much and seeing too much. He has pain every day and walks with a cane, and has soldiers heart/PTSD. He goes on picnics with his Confederate gun and wants to kill himself, but he never follows through.

When the war was finished he went back; he couldn’t hold jobs, but he eventually ran for county clerk. He was elected but before he could serve, the stress and wounds took him and he died in December 1868 at the age twenty-three.
