The Space Race: Soviet Union.VS. United States of America

  • Sputnik 1

Sputnik 1 was a satellite the siz of a beach ball, meant to orbit the earth in space, launched by the USA in 1957. This is important because it was the start of the space race and was the first ever satellite to be launched in space.
  • First living being in space

The first living being to go up in space was a dog, named Laika. She was launched into space on Sputnik 2, the second space crafted to be launched in orbit. This is important because, now we knew that living things can surive in space.
  • Ham the Astrochimp

'Ham" the first chimpanzee in space was launched into space in january of 1961 and returned successfully. this is important because without "Ham" being launche into space Alan Shepard would have never gone into space on May 5, 1961.
  • The First Human in Space

The first human being in space was Yuri Gagrin launched by the Soviet Union in 1961. This is important because no one had ever went off the earth it was a huge deal, it led to a lot of new things new questions new experiments. Soviet Union got a big win with this it made the U.S. want to do something bigger and better thanever before, that's how they came up with the idea of sending people to the moon.
  • First Space Walk

Alexey Leonov, a soviet union air force major general became the first person to conduct the first space walk, He got out of his capulse on March 18th, 1965 and made history through his 12 minute space walk. This is important because, the world now knew that a person could survive (with oxygen) in spaces atmosphere. Without this happening no one would have gone on the moon.
  • Apollo1

Apollo 1 was going to be the first U.S. spacecraft to go in space with a crew of people inside but, during the test there was a cabin fire killing the whole crew thatwas inside. This is important because ifthe fire didn't happen the U.S. might not have gone back and fixed the problem, maybe resulting in someones death in space.
  • Apollo 7

This was the first U.S. shipto carry a crew of people, after a failed attempt with Apollo 1 which resulted in a cabin fire killing all three people. This is important because it was a big sucess and a risk (after what happened with Apollo 1) for the U.S.
  • Apollo 9

Apollo 9 went into orbit meant to test the emergency equiment to see if it would work if there was emergency while in orbit if it would work. This is important because if Apollo 9 didnt go into orbit someone on the ship that landed on the moon could have got sick or hurt and could have died. If Apollo 9 didn't happen Apollo 11 might not have launched that same year or even at all.
  • Apollo 11

The first people to walk on the moon were Neil Armstorng and Buzz Aldrin. This is important because the USA had acomplished they're and changed the world.

The End of the Cold War

The end of the cold war happened when the Soviet Union and the U.S.A. signed agreement on a Apollo- Syuz test project in April of 1972, resulting in a compromise of the two and eventually them working together. This is important because they both hadsuch advanced tecnology that now they could be better together.
