Sputnik 1
The Sputnik 1 satelite launched on October 4, 1957 by the Soviet Union. This event is the official start of The Space Race or competition between the Soviet Union and The U.S. for space exploration. -
Sputnik 2
The launch of Sputnik 2 was significant because this space craft held the first living being ever to orbit Earth. This living creature was a dog by the name of Laika. -
M-R2
The launch of M-R2 (American) was rather important because its passenger, Ham the Chimpanzee, was the first hominidae in space and this passenger performed the first tasks in space. -
First human space flight and first human-crewed orbit
This event was seriously important. It was an extremely new level for man kind because the first man had made it to space un-scathed. -
First planetary flyby
The first planetary flyby was made possible by The Soviets. The space craft that executed the flyby was Venera 1 (Sputnik 8). The space craft came within 100,000 meters of the surface of Venus. -
Apollo 8
Apollo 8 was the first piloted orbital mission of another celestrial body, following this event teh first ever trans-Earth injection was executed. These were important because by this time the U.S. had came ahead of Russia but by executiing these actions they also asserted their dominance. -
Apollo 11
Apollo 11 was the single event that won the space race for the Americans. This event marked the first human on the moon ever. It also marked the first launch off of another celestial body other than Earth. -
SAS 2
SAS 2 was the first gamma radiational observatory. This event marked the day that we could see different wave lengths in space. -
Apollo-Soyuz test project
Apollo-Soyuz test project was the first multinational manned mission. This achievment ended the race for space berween the U.S. and the Soviet Union. -
Viking Lander
The Viking Lander was the first exploror to recover soil and photos from Mars surface. This event was a new step for how far we could go through out the solar system.
