    The Spoace Race

  • First Intercontinental Ballastic Missile

This missile signafies the start of the space race becuase it was the first one to travel ove continets and it proved that it may be possible to get to the moon. A ballistic missile is a missile that leaves the earths atomphere then renters it. The missile was launched by the Russians.
  • First Sattelite

THe first sattelite in space was launched by the Russians. It was called Sputnik 1. It is often considered the first step in the Space Race. SPutnik 1 survived spaces harsh climate to July the fourth 1958. It managed to traverse around 60 million kilometers and three months in orbit.
  • First Animal in Orbit

The first animal in orbit was a dog named Laika. She was put into orbit by the Russians which had prevously sent up other dogs but had not managed to get them into orbit. Laika was killed when the space ship Sputnik 2 overheated in it's fourth cycle of flight and the temprature was to much for her body to endure. The Russians his this fact until 2002, either by saying that she had been killed ofoxgen strvation on the fourth day and she had been enthusinated before she suffacated.
  • First U.S Sattelite.

The first U.S owned sattelite launched into space, It was called Explorer 1. It transmitted data back to eareth for four months until it's batteries ran out. It remaind in orbit until 1970 when it finally burned up in earths atomphere. I was the first space craft to discover the Van Allen Belts which are belts of radation in space.
  • First Communications Sattelite

The first communications sattelite in space was launched by the U.S and was called Project SCORE. It had the ability to store, reciuevew and trensmitt voice messages. It was used by President D.Whieght to transmit a christmas message to the world.
  • First Weather Sattelite

The first weather sattelite was launched by the U.S and Nasa. I was called the Vanguard 2. It's purpose was to measure cloud-cover disbitsution when it was ion the daytime part of it's orbit. It is designed to last for around 300 years in space. As of April the fourth 2012 it was still transmitting.
  • First Resconnaince Sattelite

The First Reconniance sattelite or spy sattelite was launched by the U.S and Nasa. No exact date is avialbe on the Sattelites launch and information becuase most of the data and classifications of the sattelites is still top secret.
  • Photo of Earth from Space

The first photo of earth from space was taken by the U.S.A's space craft Explorer 6. It was taken using a Black and White camera.
  • Pobe sent to the Moon

The first probe/robot on the moon was from the Russians. It was called the Luna 1, it managed to successfullyt escape earths gravity and managed to get within a few kilometres from the moon. The second probe sent by the Russians was called Luna 2 and landed on the moon.
  • Photo of the far side of the Moon

The first photo of the far side of the moon was taken by the Russian's space craft Luna 3. Luna 3 has two predessecors whish are called Luna1 and Luna 2. They have successful managed to land on the moon. Luna 3 managed to take 29 photos over about the course of 40 minutes.
  • Human in Orbit

Yuri Gagarin was the first human sent up into orbit. He was in the Russian space craft Vostok 1. He completed one full orbit of earth before returning back to the earths surface. He was the first human in space as well as the first human in orbit. When he returned back to Russia he was hailed a s a national hero and recieved one of the the higest honours you can get given by recieving the Russian People Award.
  • First Active Communications Sattelite

The fist transmitting sattellite was launched by the U.S.A and was called the Telstar. It was used by a wide number of companies in the U.S.A but was kmost frequently used by the B.B.C network for their television shows. The aucual tyransmitting part of the sattelite was designed by James M.Early among other scientist ibn the team.
  • First Sattelite In Orbit by a Non-Super Power

The first sattelite in orbit that wasn't luanch by either Russia of U.S.A was the Allouette 1, which was launched by the Canadian Goverment. There were also two duplicate sattelites made just in case the first failed or there was an error the duplicates could be luanched without to much delay.
  • First Woman In Space

Valentina Tereshkova was the first women in space. She was put into orbit by the Russian space craft Vostok 6. She was in orbit for 3 days before she returned to earth. While she was in space she conducted various tests on herself to test the female bodies reations and workings and see if they were any diofferent from on earth or from a mans.
  • Probe Lands on another Planet

The Russians luanched the probe Venera 3 which landed on Venus. Although the probe did land, the communication systems and other insturments failed or died before they could send back any information about Venus.
  • In-Orbit Meeting

The first meeting of two space crafts in space was accomplished by the U.S.A and NASA. The first docking mission was carried out by Neil Amstrong in the Gemmini 8 space craft. But on Decemeber the 16th 1965 another U.S.A astronuat named Wally Schircha Came within 30 cm for more than 30 min with the space craft Gemini 7. The Gemini 6 and Gemini 7 weren't equipped for docking so they couldn't aucuyally join together.
  • Human on the Moon

Neil Amstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon, he landed in the U.S.A space craft Apollo 11. Also onboard the Apollo 11 was Buzz Aldrien and Michael Colins. This here was only the second all-vetyern crew in the history of the space race. Millions of people watched as the Apollo 11 took of and left earthws atomphere. Neil Amstrongs words as he stepped onto the moon became famous, he said "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".
  • First Space Station

The first space station in orbit was launched by Russia, it was called the Salyut 1. It was designed to last for 90 days and then be aboned as it weould be of no further use. It was classified as a 'monolith' station which means that it short term use. Later space stations had docking ports, and could be used for an indefinitwe amount of time as they would be constanely refuelled and resplied.
  • Sattelite Orbits Mars

The first sattellite to orbit another planet was the Mariner 9 which wasd launched as a NASA and U.S.A joint project. The Mariner 9 transmitted back over 7300 images over it's life span of just under a year. It also only narrowely beat the Russians in getting a sattelite orbiting mars by about one month.
  • First Joint Mission

The first joint mission between the Russian and U.S.A superpowers was called the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. The two countries provided joint funding and the crew was from both nationaliities. It provided the hold for the later joint missions such as the MIS space station among others.
