    In 1957, the Soviet Union had launched Sputnik 1 on October 4,1957. Sputnik 1 was the first man made satellite to orbit Earth. This achievement is given credit for starting the race beetween the United States and Russia.
  • Luna 1

    Luna 1
    In 1959, Luna 1 was the first spacecraft to reach the Moon, and the Soviet Union launched it directly to the Moon on January 2. After reaching escape, Luna 1 seperated from its 1472 third stage.
  • Luna 3

    Luna 3
    Luna 3 also had a camera built in that pointed at one end of the Moon. Luna 3 spacecraft was launched on October 4,1959 on a mission to fly past and take a picture of the Moon.

    Vostok 1 was launched on April 12, 1961 and landed on April 12, 1961. Vostok 1 was the first manned spaceship that was built by the United States, it was actually built by the Soviet Union.

    In Vostok 6, Valentina Tereshkova was the first female cosmonaut. The mision expirenced cutbacks because needed to retool the program.

    The mission was the second flight of the Apollo program and was also the first manned flight on the Saturn 5 rocket. The crew of this space module were Frank Borman, commander, James A. Lovell, command module pilot, and William A. Anders, lunar module pilot.

    On July 16, 1969 was when Apollo 11 was launched to the Moon. The importance of this mission was when Neil Armsrtong was first man on the Moon.

    Mars 2 was an unmanned spaceprobe of the Mars program. It was a series of unmanned Mars landers and orbiters launched by the Soviet Union in the early 1970's.

    Mars 3 was an unmanned space probe of the Soviet Mars program. Both probes were indentical with an orbiter and an attached lander.

    Pioneer 11 was a robotic space probe launched by NASA on April 6, 1973. It was lanched to study the asteroid belt of both Jupiter and Saturn.

    Mariner 10 was an American robotic space probe launched by NASA on November 3, 1973. It was sent to fly by Venus and Mercury.

    Venera 9 was an USSR unmanned space mission to Venus. The orbiter was the first spacecraft to orbit Venus, while the lander was the first to send back images of the surface of another planet.

    Apollo/Soyuz was the 1st manned intercooperative mission. It was the 1st joined US and Soviet space flight and the last flight of the Apollo spacecraft.

    Viking 1,2 are both an unmanhned spacecraft launched by NASA in 1975. Vikings 1,2 entered the orbits of Mars and released landers that went down on the planet and also colleted data and took pictures of the surface of Mars.

    Voyager 1 flew by Jupiter and Saturn and happens to take a photo of both of them. Voyager 2 sent unmanned space probes to Neptune and Uranus.

    On December 15, 1984 it was the Halley flyby. The spacecraft was an early development of the early Venera craft. Vega 1 is part of the Soviet space probe of the Vega program.

    On May 5, 1989 the global radar mapped the planet Venus. The Magellan spacecraft also called the Venus Radar Mapper was launched by NASA to map the surface of Venus.

    On August 5, 1997 Soyuz TM-26 repaired damaged Mir Space Station. Soyuz TM-26 was a Russian spacecraft that carried supplies back to the Mir, a Russian spacecraft.
