    Sputnik 3 is launched. This space craft was conically shaped, and had a length of 3. 57 meters long. The outer radiation belts of the earth were detected during this flight. April 6th 1960 was when this space craft ended orbit.

    Pioneer 1 is launched to a height of 70,700 miles. This was the first spacecraft launched by NASA. Pioneer 1 was fabricated by Ramo-Wooldridge Corp. It had a mass of 84.39 pounds.

    Luna 9 becomes the first spacecraft to soft-land on the Moon. It was part of the E-6 series, It transmitted photographs back to the space center. It weighed 99kg.

    Astronaut Clifton Williams is killed in a plane crash. He never actually made it to space. He was killed by a mechanical failure in a NASA T-38 jet trainer. He was piloting the jet to visit his parents in Mobile, Alabama.
