    The Sputnik 1 was launched by the Russians. The purpose of this satelliet was to strike fear in the Americans. The Sputnik 1 was a very fast satellite and constantly beeped. This was the first thing very sent up into space.

    The first dog ever sent into space was Laika, she was a Russian dog. She was sent into space to orbit the Earth and was the first living thing to orbit the Earth. Laika was launched into space aboard Sputnik 2.

    The name of the satellite that was successfully launched into space by NASA was called Explorer 1. This was four months after the Russians launched their satellite into space (Sputnik 1). So, this means NASA/America have their satellite orbiting the Earth just like the Russians.

Also, NASA does a lot of other things than astronomical exploration, like the weather. One good thing about NASA is AMerica has a space station.

    The shuttle used to get up into space for the space walk was Voskhod. The first man to do the space walk was Russian, and his name was Alexei Leonov.

    Ed White was the first U.S man to do a space walk. It lasted 23 minutes over Hawaii and the Gulf of Mexico. Although he wasn't the first man to do the space walk (that was Alexei Leonov) it was still a very huge deal for NASA and even America.

    Gemini 7 was a space flight conducted by NASA's Gemini program. It took Gemini 7 14 days.

    Apollo 8 was a space shuttle. NASA launched it from The Kennedy Space Center located in Florida. Its travel lasted 147 hours. Apollo 8's flight was finisheed on December 27, six days after it was launched into space.

    On March 2nd, NASA launched Pioneer 10. It was the first spacecraft to travel through the astroid belt. It was built at Ames Research Center.
