    It was approved in January. Ratified in December. It abolished slavery in the United States.
  • Freedmen's Bureau

    Freedmen's Bureau
    Congress establishes Freedmen's Bureau in March to provide assistance to the emancipated slaves. Responsibilities and powers expanded by Congress. Legislation is vetoed by Johnson but Congress overrides his veto in 1866. IN 1872 it is abolished.

    In Lincoln's second inaugural address, he discussed the end of the war. He called the nation to unite. He offered kindness and mercy to the South rather than punishment.

    The radical republicans tried to impeach president Johnson for trying to block the reconstruction. They argued that he had broken the law by firing a proradical cabinent member. He kept his spot in office by just one vote.

    The reconstruction officially ended after the presidential election of 1876. Southern governments passed the Jim Crow laws and african americans were disenfranchised.
