The WPC met with the mayor of Montgomey (WA Gayle). The purpose of the meeting was to pass along their recommendations to change the bus system.

Claudette Colvin was a 15 year old girl in Montgomery. She was arrested because she refused to give her seat to a white person.

Mary Louise Smith was arrested for not giving up her seat for a white person.

Rosa Parks was the final person to be arrested for not giving their seat up before the a boycott began.

The WPC called for a boycott of the Montgomery bus system. This boycott was initially supposed to only be 1 day.

The initial boycott was extended due to monumental turnout. The Montgomery Improvement Association was formed and MLK was named the leader.

The MIA developed a carpool system to make it easier for people to continue to boycott the bus.

About 80 (initially over 100) of the boycott leaders were indicted under anti-conspiracy charges.

MLK was one of the many people that were indicted due to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He was indicted as the leaders.

It was not until around this point when the federal government took action. A Federal District Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court upheld the ruling by the district court which led laws that required bus segregation being eliminated.

The City of Montgomery officially desegregated the buses which end the MIA's boycott.
