  • Samuel Morse invented the telegraph

    Although Samuel Morse did not invent the telegraph he did make key improvements to its design. The idea of using electricity to communicate over distance changed communication for the future. By 1860, telegraph wires stretch from the east coast of the United States west of the Mississippi River.
  • Elias Howe invents the sewing machine.

    Elias's invention helped the mass production of sewing machines and clothing. This revolutionised the sewing industry and freed women from some of the drudgery of daily life at the time.
  • Louis Pasteur develops vaccines for diseases.

  • Alexander Graham Bell patents the telephone.

    Alexander successfully patented the telephone after many past inventions failed (by other inventors). In 1875 Bell had created a simple receiver that could turn electricity into sound.
  • Thomas Edison uses a light bulb to light a lamp.

    Although Thomas Edison is often seen as the inventor of the light bulb many other people attempted to make a similar invention, however, his was the only one that was able to outstrip the earlier versions.
  • Louis Pasteur develops vaccines for diseases.

    In 1881, he helped develop a vaccine for anthrax, which was used successfully in sheep, goats and cows. Then, in 1885, while studying rabies, Pasteur tested his first human vaccine.
