The History of the Space Suit

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2342265/Yuri-Gagarins-mysterious-death-finally-solved.html http://www.wired.com/2011/10/spacesuit-evolution/ Yurin Gargarin, a Russian Cosmonaut, successfully used the world's first spacesuit when he entered space. This was the first time anyone had ever entered space in a spacecraft. This suit had its own life support system, as well as its own pressure system. However, the suit was yet to have enough durability to enter the vacuum of space.
  • The Silversuit

    The Silversuit
First astronauts' spacesuits were a marvel in their day NASA's first space suit, the "Silver Suit" was used during the Mercury program. These suits were not intended to be used outside of the spacecraft, and were made with aluminized nylon coated in neoprene. The first silver suits did not have their own life support. The astronuats relied on the spacecraft to provide them with life support and oxygen.

However, the metal backpack contained 45 minutes worth of oxygen. This spacesuit had a small range of motion and made it difficult for Cosmonaut Leonov to return to his spacecraft.
  • Lunar Landing

These additions to the suit allowed the Astronoauts to travel away from their spacecraft and explore the lunar surface. These suits had their own oxygen supplies and did not rely on the spacecraft for oxygen. Even more impressive, these suits could provided their own electrical currents, and they also filtered out carbon dioxide.

http://www.wired.com/2011/10/spacesuit-evolution/ New space suits such as the Advanced crew Escape suite and the Sokol, are used during lift off and landing, because other suits are too harsh on the Astronaut's body. NASA is working on a spacesuit that will provide astronauts with a full range of motion. Current space suits provide astronauts with all the advantages of the space shuttle. NASA is also researching skin tight suits that don't rely on gas pressurization.
