    In 1800, the idea of photography permenantly stuck, and everyone began trying to create a successful camera.
  • The Wollaston Meniscus

    The Wollaston Meniscus
    In 1812, William Hyde Wollaston's creation of eyeglasses were transformed into photographic lenses. This lens was used on the camera obscura.
  • The Camera Obscura

    The Camera Obscura
    In the 9th century, a man named Alhazen came up with the idea of a camera obscura. Later on (in 1820), Nicephore Niepce created a successful copy.
  • Daguerrotype

    Daguerrotype
    In 1839, Louis Daguerre created the Daguerrotype: A technique of producing sharper photos, using a silver plate.
  • Chromatic Abberation

    Chromatic Abberation
    Chromatic Abberation is colour distortion in an image. This was first used on the Meniscus Lens (created by William Hyde Wollaston.)
  • The Petzval Portrait Lens

    The Petzval Portrait Lens
    This lens was created by Joseph Petzval- there was an international prize offered for a faster lens to be created. The lens Petzval created was known for quickly finding the right exposure, and was very convenient for taking portraits. This lens is still being sold (with major improvements.)

    In 1855, James Clerk Maxwell discovered a way to take black and white photographs, and filter them to be multicoloured. The photos still weren't true to what the scene would actually look like- he only used 3 colours. The image to the left is the very first coloured photograph.

    In 1871, George Eastman created the Dry Plate Photography Proccess- which enabled more convenient access to editing. This also lowered the costs of photography.
  • The First Film

    The Roundhay Garden Scene was the world's very first piece of roll film. It was created by Louis Aime Augustin Le Prince.
  • The Brownie Box Camera

    The Brownie Box Camera
    In early 1900, the Kodak brownie box was introduced. It soon grew to be very popular- millions of them were sold. Their slogan was: You press the button, we do the rest.
  • Ansel Easton Adams

    Ansel Easton Adams
    Ansel Adams was an American Photographer. He was (and still is) known for his black and white photographs of Yosemite National Park. He lived for 82 years- and died on April 22, 1984. He was born in the Western Addition of San Francisco, California.
  • The SLR camera

    The SLR camera
    One of the first SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras was invented by Leica (a German photography company). The first marketed SLR camera had a 'rangefinder' body, and the lens sold with it was a 200mm f4.5 lens.
  • Japanese Production

    Japanese Production
    The Konishiroku Hexar 10.5 cm f/4.5 lens was one of their first lenses, and was built to work with the Konishiroku Tropical Lily small plate camera. By 1950, they were able to improve the quality by substantial amounts; as well as invest in businesses/factories.

    Colour Roll Film
    Colour roll film, created in 1935, was officially invented by Kodak. This company used a projecter, which brought colour to images.
  • First Underwater Camera

    First Underwater Camera
    The first camera suitable for both land and water was the Calypso. The Calypso was reintroduced in 1963 as the Nikonos. The Nikonos was specifically designed for underwater usage.
  • SD Card

    SD Card
    The first SD card had 1.0 GB, and was created by Sandisk. Sandisk now has an SD card that holds the most GB out of any other in the world.
