  • The Invention of Film

    H.W Goodwin invented a celluloid film which could hold photos. It was made of gum cotton and gum camphor.

  • The first screening of an animated movie

    The first screening of an animated film was in 1892, France. Charles-Emile Reynaud created an animated film, using a Praxinoscope, a device which he had invented years earlier.The Praxinoscope was a device which used reflection from mirrors to create the illusion of a moving image

  • The Kinetoscope

    Using H.W Goodwin's invention of celluloid film, Thomas Edison created a Kinetoscope. The Kinetoscope was a device which could display films through a peephole to one person at a time.

  • Sound is recorded for the first time

    One of the earliest sound recording devices is invented. It used the technology of magnetics. Animators would later use the device to add sound to their films

  • The Enchanted Drawing

    James Stuart Blackton used a new animation technique to document the process of the drawing of charachter, without ever showing the artist's hands. This made it seem like the drawing appeared out of nowhere

  • Fantasmagorie - The first official animated film

    Emil Cohl, A frenchman created a short film that he called Fantasmagorie. The film consisted of over 700 drawings that were played in quick succession to give the illusion of a moving picture. Fantasmagorie consisits of a stick figure, who encounters a number of moving objects. The fillm lasts for just under one and a half minutes

  • Gertie the dinosaur

    A man called Windsor McCay created an animated film called Gertie the Dinosaur. It became very popular

  • Felix the Cat is created

    Otto Messmer, an American man made a short animated film featuring a cat called Felix. Felix the cat became extrememely popular very quicky.

  • Walt Disney creates a film studio

    At 20 years of age, Walt Disney makes his first film studio, called Laugh-O-Grams. It fails, and he is forced to shut it down.

  • Steamboat Willie

    Walt Disney releases a short film named Steamboat Willie. It has huge success and become very popular. It features MIckey Mouse. It was the first animation film to use sound.

  • Warner Brothers is born

    Warner Bros., a popular animation complany opens it's first studio. The company releases Looney Tunes. It's success was unexpected

  • The first animated feature-length film

    Walt Disney produced the first animated feature-length film. It was an adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and it became hugely successful

  • Computer generrated movies

    Ed Catmull, an American man invented a method to create computer generated films. He was a student at the university of Utah at the time.

  • 3D films

    Apple company created a technology for #d films to be made. It would revolutionise the animation industry

  • Toy Story, the first 3D film

    The first 3D film, called Toy Story is produced by Walt Disney. It is immesnly popular.
