    Chinese Exclusion Act

    Denied citizenship to people born in China and prohitbited the immigration of Chinese laborers. This reduced the amount of Chinese coming into the country as well as making the Chinese already in the country they had to get certification to reenter.
  • Geary Act

    After the Chinese Exclusion Act was expired, the US extended it for another ten years and renaming it the Geary Act. This act also required the Chinese residences to register and obtain a certificate of residence. Or they would be deported.

    Europeans get first glimpse of the Statue of Liberty. Providing hope for many.
  • Immigration Restriction League and President Grover Cleveland

    The immigration Restriction League was made to make immigrants take a literacy test to get into but President Grover Cleveland cancelled it because it was illiberal, narrow, and un-American.

    World War I

    During the World War many blacks moved away from the South to the North help creating the start of the migration plus rural South and Urban North.

    African American migration period

    The African Americans moved westward. During this period a lot of them moved away from North and South. .
  • Strikes in 1918

    Nearly 4500 strikes involving more than 1 million workers erupted in 1917 alone. Working conditions substantially improved throughout the war.
  • National War Labor Board

    NWLB arbitrated disputes between workers and employers.
  • Second largest movement

    800,000 people blacks left the South.
  • Repealing exlusion acts

    During this time Congress decided to remove all of the exclusions.
