The First Constitutional Convention

  • The First Continental Congress

    The First Continental Congress
    Delegates from every colony except Georgia met in Philadelphia. Nearly two months, the members of that first Continental Congess discussed the worsening situation and debated plans for action. They sent a Declaration of Rights. They protesting Britain's colonial policies, to King George the third.
  • The Second Continental Congress

    The Second Continental Congress
    A "shot heard'round the world" had been fired. Lexington and Concord had been fighting three weeks earlier, on Aprol, 19. A revolution had begun.
  • The First State Constitutions

    The First State Constitutions
    New Hampshire adopted a constitution to replace their Royal Charter. A few months later, South Carolina followed and on May 10th, nearly two months before the adoption of the declaration of independence, congress urged each of the colonies to adopt.
  • The Declaration of Independence

    The Congress and a Committee of five; Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robrt Livingston and Thomas Jefferson adopted the Declaration of Independence, had proclaimed the existence of the new nation.

    Since the articles of Confederation were approved, it had established "a firm league" . each state kept it's sovereignty, freedom, and independence.

    Demand grew for a stronger government, those threatened by economic and political instability soon took the lead into efforts to that end.
