    A man named Eadweard Muybridge set up a race track for a horse to determine if a horse while in full gallop lifts all four hooves. He did this by using 24 cameras. This set the stage for films in general. He would then invent a breakthrough device called the zoopraxiscope, which was a projection machine used to display the images.

    The Lumiere Brothers pioneered movie making with their cinematography projection machine. Their shorts in 1995 were regarded as the first commercial films. In 1899, the first theater was built in Philadelphia.

    Western films were first created in 1903 by the Edison Corporation, and also introduced usage of editing films. This also caused a increase of story based films in both popularity and production.

    Though Dadaism started in 1915, it didn't become much of anything until 1920 in Paris, France. The people of France were showing disillusionment towards country's government and economy, and they expressed this with art. The 1920s was the era of surrealist film.

    The Jazz Singer was the first feature length motion picture that used synchronized music and lip synchronous singing and speech. This film ended the silent film era, and started the pre-Coded Hollywood era.

    This era was basically Hollywood without censorship or limits. It focused a lot on sinful deeds within films such as prostitution and murder. This was cut short though when the Production Picture Production Code was made, which banned explicit depictions of sinful deeds within films.

    The golden age of Hollywood was heavily focused on iconic figures, mainly the actors. This was because stars can draw lots of attention to movies and Hollywood knew that. Hay's Code also really tamed Hollywood fall all 34 years of the golden age. This led to Hollywood using romanticism, but it made many films unrealistic. The code also forbade miscegenation. The golden age also birthed film noirs, and western films were absolutely huge with the audience.

    After the release of Sharp, color was introduced to film with technicolor. Movies like Wizard of Oz popularized the use of technicolor, though it has been proved as difficult to use and quite expensive during that time. For those reasons, new technologies for color would be made later on.

    Five major motion picture studios, Paramount being one of them, violated the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. This is the reason why movie studios cannot create and distribute films to their own theaters. This was a great impact on American cinema. This allowed international films and independent theaters.

    Films were larger, more realistic, darker in subjects, and way more graphic. This returned popular genres before the code era, like gangster and sex-centric films. this era created films such as Godfather and Taxi Driver, though the era came to an end quickly with blockbuster films such as Jaws and Star Wars.

They attempted, and succeeded, in making a whole movie that was completely computer generated. Toy Story was the first animated film to be completely computer generated. This marked the beginning of 3-D animated movies such as Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Up.
