    Communism gained traction among the political leaders in China. Stalin opposed the Chinese Communist Party in Xinjiang because he wanted to expand Soviet influence in the province.

    The CIA was created by Congress when they passe the National Security Act of 1947. It actually comes from the OSS of World War II, which died in October 1945 and its functions were transferred to the State and War Departments.

  • Korean War began

    Korean War began
    In April 1950 Kim Il-sung travelled to Moscow and secured support for a policy to unify Korea. Although agreeing with the invasion of South Korea in principle, Stalin didn't want to become directly involved in Kim's plans, and told Kim to get Chinese support instead. In May 1950 Kim visited Beijing, and succeeded in getting endorsement.

    The United States suffered 33,686 battle deaths, 2,830 non-battle deaths and 8,176 missing in action. The PVA suffered 400,000 killed and the KPA had 500,000. Between some 245,000 to 415,000 South Korean civilian deaths and the total civilian casualties was estimated 1,500,000-3,000,000.

    Sputnik 1 was the first artificial satellite to be put into Earth's orbit. It was launched into an elliptical low Earth orbit by the Soviet Union.
  • NASA created

    NASA created
    There was challenge to launch an artificial satellite for the International Geophysical Year. After the Soviet launch of the world's first artificial satellite the attention of the US turned toward its own space efforts. The U.S. Congress, alarmed by the perceived threat to national security and technological leadership urged immediate and swift action President Eisenhower counseled more deliberate measures. This led to an agreement that a new federal agency mainly based on NACA was needed.

    The Communist Party of Cuba was created on October 3, 1965. The Communist party remains the only recognized political party in Cuba. Other parties, though not illegal, can't campaign or do any activities on the island that could be counter-revolutionary.

    The Bay of Pigs Invasion was unsuccessful by CIA-trained force of Cuban exiles to invade southern Cuba, with support and encouragement from the US government, in an attempt to overthrow the Cuban government of Fidel Castro. Unfortunately the US never gave the support they promised causing the failure.

    Cuban Missile Crisis began
    The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. The United States was at its highest state of readiness ever and Soviets in Cuba were prepared to use nuclear weapons to defend the island. All was averted, though.
