Fernand realizes who Monte Cristo is and rushes home, only to discover that Mercedes and his son Albert are leaving. He proceeds to hide away in his bedroom and kill himself.

The baby incident is revealed, dishonoring Villefort. He returns home too late to stop his wife from commiting suicide and killing her son along with herself. The Count of Monte Cristo reveals to Villefort that he is Edmond Dantes, adding to the horrible shock.
