  • Who is Friedrich Engels

    Friedrich Engels was born in Barmen in November 28, 1920 in Rhine Providence, Prussia in Germany. He was a German journalist, socialist scientist, philosopher, and businessman. Engels came from a business family in which his father owned a textile company and partner in a cotton plant in Manchester. At an early age, Engels already developed his own social, economic and philosophical views in which different from his father. Nonetheless, he did not complete his secondary education.

    In 1843, he finally met Moses Hess who influenced him that communism is the "logical solution to progress." He also urged him to go England where class differences were becoming more and more prominent. From that point he convinced his father to send him to Manchester to work in his textile plant. Although, pursuing his own agenda, he played a double life as a successful business, but also continue his research on issues such as child labor, and lives and conditions of workers.

    In 1845, Engels joined Marx in Brussels where they rally the German workers and became members of the German Communist League. They drafted a manifesto for the league which is famously known as the Communist Manifesto. In 1848, they started the revolution which echoed to Prussia from France. Marx and Engels resided in Cologne and continued advocating that “a democracy would be the first step towards communism. Consequently, in 1849 Marx citizenship was revoked by the Prussian Gov.
  • Engels Later Life

    In 1864, Engels returned to England to work at his father’s plant where he was made partner. Engels published more articles under his name such as “Revolution and Counter-Revolution in Germany in 1848.” In 1893, he sold his share in the plant and moved to London. They kept working together until Marx died in 1883. Engels continued his communism battles holding conferences with German Social democrats and later died after long battle of throat cancer on August 5, 1895.
