The roots of The Cold War reached back many years, As far back the 1920s and 1930s, the United States had viewed the Soviet Union as a potential enemy. Americans were hostile to the ideas of communism and had at times feared its spread to the United States. President Roosevelt met with Allied leaders at the Yalta CDonference to discuss postwar issues.

    A Russian clerk named Igor Gouzenko escaped the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa with 109 documents proving the existence of a Soviet spy ring in Canada. His actions helped to ignite the Cold War.

    Berlin BlockadeSoviets were not pleased by the idea of a western style government and economy in the middle of the soviet zone of occupation. On June 1948 they decided to take drastic action. the soviets announced that they would block any road, rail or river traffic into West Berlin. Suddenly, West Berlin's 2.1 million residents had been cut off from sources of food, coal and other basic necessities. within days of the Soviet Blockade american airplanes began making deliveries to the people of west berlin.

    This event connects to the Cold War because the communist Soviets were the people behind the depravation to those living the West Berlin.

    The Soviets detenate a bomb that destroys everything in its path. All is incinerated. The houses, building and insert animals.

    Mao ZedongMao Zedong, a known communist rebel, is finally able to take control of China. With his communist rule, the United States and the countries of NATO once again have another communist nation to contain.

    the Korean War began when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People's Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People's Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south.
  • Rosenburg Spy Case

    They were American communists who were convicted and executed in 1953 for conspiracy to commit espionage during a time of war. The charges related to them was the accusation of passing information about the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. This was the first execution of civilians for espionage in United States history.

    Massive Retaliation was a strategy designed to prevent the spread of communism. The plan was to pur Russia on the brink of war by almost destroying them entirely while using nuclear weapons against them. The idea was released in s speech mate by John Foster Dulles.

    Abdel Nasser nationalizes the Suez Canal, taking it away from the British and French. The British and French both fought back, with Israel joining their side. The United States and Soviet Union fought for the Egyptians, who won the dispute. This incresed tensions in the Middle East.

    Fidel CastroOverthrew a dictator and established a Marxist socialist state in Cuba. He also ordered Cuba to process oil from the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Becouse Cuba and The soviet Union has reached a trade agreement.

    Sputnik was the first orbital satellite launched into space. The launching of Sputnik increased the paranoia among the United States that there was a missle gap between them and the Soviet Union. This further increased the tensions between the two superpowers.

The first instance of success in space was the Soviet Unions launch of Sputnik, a satellite. The Space Race ended with the United States launching the first man on the moon, Niel Armstrong. The Space Race connects to the cold war because it was another advancement that the United States and the Soviet Union competed for.

    A political sex scandal, Gerda Munsinger, an alleged East German prostitute and Soviet spy living in Ottawa who had slept with many of the goverments men.
  • U-2 Spy Plane Affair

    rancis Garry Powers was killed in a plane crash. He was the piolate of a U-2 airplane. There is suspicions related to the actual cause of the plane crash. It is believed by some the he was shot down by the Soviets. Some believe it may have been a technical issue.The crash related to the cold war because the Americans were spying on the Soviets to acquire information on the Soviet's developmental progress on nuclear weapons.

    Bay of pigsThe Bay of Pigs was JFK's failed attempt to overthrow the Cuban government led by Fidel Castro. The plan to invade was thwarted by Castro's own army who stopped the troops sent by JFK. This related to the cold war due to our attempt at terminating communist leadership.

    Six Day of warNasser of Egypt puts a naval blockade on Israel. Fearing attack, the Israelians strike first, destorying Egyptian air forces and fields. By the end of the war, Israel had 3 times the land it started with, and devastated Nasser's rule.

    This event caused the necessety for the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War. The Tet Offense was a surprise attack initiated by a rebel group in Vietnam. This relates to the U.S involvement in Vietnam during the Cold War and the attempt to gain peace through violence.
