    The end of ww2 started with Europe defeating the nazis on May 8 but in the U.S they were fighting a different war agist japan because they were expanding and the u.s was trying to stop it. The U.s declared war on Japan on December 8 because japan attacked the day before. On September 2 of 1945 japan surrender, from that day on it was named VJ day
  • Berlin Blockade

    Berlin Blockade
    In June 1948 the U.S. and Britain announced a proposal for establishing a new currency, the Deutschmark, into West Berlin. This caused chaos in the soviet union as they had to adjust to the new currency system. So the Soviets reponed on June 24 by cutting off all land and water routes however the air was available. Since the U.S and Brittan couldn't send the supplies in those ways they sent them through the air. This made Stail look like a terrible leader so lifted the blockade on May 12 1949.
  • Korean War

    On, June 25, 1950, The north invaded the south pushing them all the way to the tip of the peninsula in a matter of months. the U.S intervened by landing in Incheon, with their help the south pushed back up to the Chinese border. Then the Chinese fought back and pushed them down to the 38 parallel. this was an important war, where the U.S wins its first battle of containment against the soviet union, without starting a war.
  • Vietnam War

    The French could no longer control Vietnam so Ho Chi Minh of North Vietnam, began a campaign of terrorism against the south. the U.S. was fighting against the communist North Vietnamese, the Soviets decided to back up the communists. the cost and the death toll turned Americans totally against the war and on April 30, 1975 the last American troops left. This war was key to the idea of the cold war because the U.S. and Soviets helped the opposing sides but didn’t have to wage war on each other.
  • Sputnik crisis

    the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1,the first Earth satellite,it scared Americans. Yes,the Sputnik wasn't harmless, its orbiting implied that the Soviet Union was watching them.The Soviet showed the capability with a successful 6,000 km test flight of the R-7 booster.Congress passed a National Defense Education Act, which put billions into USA's education, starting the space race. It made Americans focus on advancements, the event not only changed the Cold War but also how we live every day.
  • U-2 incident

    U-2 incident
    The U-2 Incident,the Soviet Union shot down a U.S. U-2 a plane and called the flight an aggressive act.The U.S. claims that the pilot, F. Gary Powers had stated that his mission was to collect Soviet intelligence data. Powers was tried in the Soviet Union,sentenced to 10 years in prison. In 1962 he was exchanged for the Soviet spy Rudolf Abel.This event is extremely important to the Cold War because it was one of the few times the Soviets did direct physical damage to America.

    Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons,the Non-Proliferation Treaty is an international treaty whose objective is to prevent, spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology. Countries started it came into effect in 1970. 190 parties have joined the Treaty, five states being nuclear-weapon states: the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, and China. It is important because both the U.S. and the Soviets agreed to not use nuclear weapons.

    Cuban Missile Crisis, U.S. and the Soviet Union were in a tense, 13-day political and military standoff over the nuclear missiles on Cuba.on October 22, 1962, Kennedy notified Americans about the missiles, he decided to blockade Cuba and was prepared to use military force if necessary,many people feared that nuclear war would happen. the U.S. agreed to remove the Cuban missiles, and not invade. The event was important to them because it was the closest they ever came to war or combat
  • Vietnam War

    It was fought between Afghan forces against the multi-national rebels, the mujahideen.The Soviets led the Afghans because they were communist and had good resources.The rebels were backed by the U.S. to combat the Soviets without having to declare war on them. the war resulted in millions of Afghans fleeing their country, mostly to Pakistan and Iran. Hundreds of thousands were killed.It ended on February 15, 1989. This is important to the Cold War because that is how the U.S. and Soviets clash.

    in West Germany, as a result of the help provided by its occupying forces, quickly grew. The opposite occurred in East Germany. Valuable assets were shipped back to the Soviet Union and economic recovery was slow and stagnant. With many East Berliners fleeing, a physical barrier between the two sides of Berlin was built.on November 9, 1989,he announcing that East Germans could freely use all border crossings to the nation.The Soviet Union Collapsed and then the U.S. could finally exist in peace.
