    In response to the massive exodus of East Germans to the West, the East German government, with Soviet approval, constructed the Berlin Wall. The wall became a symbol of the division between the communist and capitalist worlds.

    Alexander Dubcek in Czechoslovakia was spreading reformist ideas. The Soviet Union didn't like that so they invaded Czechoslovakia to suppress the movement.

    The Soviet Union and the US had many negotiation aimed to limit the construction and use of nuclear weapons. Several agreements were reached, including the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty. This helped ease the tension between the two superpowers.

    There was a lot of pressure from political reform in the East, so the government finally allowed citizens to freely travel to the West. On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall was breached, symbolizing the end of the Cold War division in Europe and paving the way for German restoration.
