    A soviet embassy worker Igor Gouzenko found information on Canadian spies. He fled and gave the information to the USSR. Marked the beginning of the Cold War and an awakening of anti-Communist sentiment.

    Formation of the United Nations
    The United Nations was formed in hopes to keep the peace between countries. They would send volunteer peacekeeping units to various situations around the world to try and prevent violence and keep the peace. The peacekeepers did a good job at keeping the peace between countries. Canadian volunteers were part of the peacekeepers for almost all the situations they were sent to. They still are peacekeeping today.

    The Soviet Union and its attached Communist nations in Eastern Europe founded a rival alliance, the Warsaw Pact. The alignment of nearly every European nation into one of the two opposing camps formalized the political division of the European continent that had taken place since World War II. Further Communist expansion prompted the United States and 11 other Western nations to form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

    North Korea invaded South Korea. North Korea was helped by China and the USSR. South Korea was helped by the United Nations and the US. Both sides did not win the war it was a draw as the countries are both still there today. Many people died.

    Seven European sign a treaty establishing the Warsaw Pact called on the member states to come to the defense of any member attacked by an outside force and it set up a unified military command under Marshal Ivan S. Konev of the Soviet Union. Soviet Union and its affiliated Communist nations in Eastern Europe founded a rival alliance, the Warsaw Pact.

    North Vietnam wanted to take over south Vietnam. The North was supported by the USSR and the south was supported by the US. North Vietnam and the USSR were able to take south Vietnam. The US decided to stop helping south Vietnam due to high casualties.

    Canadian and American air forces work together to defend the north. Together Canada and America could create one of the best air defences.

    The Cancellation of the Avro Arrow
    Canada designed an aircraft that could stop nuclear missiles mid-flight. It was discontinued because America sent us better un-manned rocket-propelled ones. The Avro Arrow production turned out to be a waste of time, but in the end we got better technology.

    (1962 October 16th - 28th) The USSR were installing nuclear missiles in Cuba. The US was not happy about this so they surrounded the island with their military forcing the USSR to take their missiles elsewhere. The US scared the USSR away from their borders. So the USSR did not have missiles in such close range to the US and Canada.

    The USSR and US agree on a treaty to limit the amount of nuclear missiles in their arsenals. There were not as many nuclear missiles in the world.

    A anti ballistic defence system was created, designed to defend against nuclear missiles. The country was protected from nuclear missiles.

    The wall was built to separate the Communist and Democratic sides and keep people from crossing. It was destroyed when the Eastern people said that they should be able to cross whenever they pleased. The East Berlin people got back into the Democrats side of Berlin.
