    The Soviet army marches into Berlin and capturs the German capital, which ends World War II. The United States, Soviet Union, Great Britian, and France divide Berlin and Germany into four secotors.
  • The Iron Curtain

    On March 1946, Britian's Prime Minister Winston Churchill made his famous Iron Curtain Speech that announced the Soviet Unions domination of Eastern Europe. It describes the boundaries that separate the Warsaw Pact and NATO countries. The countries to the east of the Iron Curtain were influenced by the Soviet Union.
  • The Marchall Plan

    The Marchall Plan
    The Marshall Plan which is officialy known as the European Recovery Program (ERP) was an American iniative to aid Western Europe after the end of World War II because the Soviet Union showed little potential in assisting. It was signed into order by President Harry Truman. The United States provided them with financial support to help rebuild the economy and prevent Soviet communism from spreading.
  • Berlin Blockade

    Berlin Blockade
    From June 1948 to May 1949 the Soviet Union blocked France, Great Britian, and the United States from entering or traveling to Berlin sectors. This was an attempt to starve the population and lead them to accept the Soviet alliance. This blockade led to the Berlin Airlift, where France, Great Britian, and the United States supplied the population with supplies.

    In 1949, communist expansion prompted the United States and western nations to establsh North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    The Korean War began on June 1950 when soldiers from North Korea crossed the 38th parallel, which is the boundary between communist North Korea and non-communist South Korea. However, the United States came to aid South Korea in an effort to stop communist belief from spreading.
  • Warsaw Pact

    Warsaw Pact
    In 1955, the Warsaw Pact was formed to respond to the establishment of NATO and Soviet leaders were becoming apprehensive about Germany expanding their military power once again.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
    The Vietnam War began on November 1955 and ended on April of 1975. The United States government was involved in the war because they were trying to prevent communism from taking over South Vietnam. North Vietnam was fighting with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) also known as the Soviet Union, while the United States was working with South Vietnam. If South Vietnam was overtaken, then South Asia would perhaps fall under communist rule.

    Sputnik 1 was the first Earth satelite that was lanched by the Soviet Union in 1957. This rattled the United States people because they felt as if they were being watched. Although Sputnik 1 was harmless, President Dwight D. Eisenhower referred to it as the Sputnik Crisis.
  • Cuba becomes Communist

    Cuba becomes Communist
    Cuba becomes communist in 1959 after Fidel Castro and his soldiers marched to Havana and the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista flees. The United States government had supported Batista; however, did not support the new revolutionary government that Castro had placed. Therefore, on April 1961, the United States launched the Bay of Pigs invasion to overthrow Fidel Catro; however, the operation was unsuccessful with Castro being the heads of state.

    On May 1960, during President Dwight D. Eisenhowers term a United States U-2 spy plane was ordered to be shoot down by premiership Nikita Khrushchev. At first the United States denied the planes mission, but the surveillance footage from the plane justifyed otherwise.

    A major confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union was in 1962, when the United States discovered that the Soviet Union had a missile instilled in Cunba. This nuclear war was averted because of President John F. Kennedy and Premier Nikita Khrushchev.

    On May of 1972, after three years of negotiations between Nixon and Brehnes, the United States and the Soviet Union signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) I document that restrain the arms race of certain nuclear weapons.

    After hundreds of thousands of East Germans had fled westward, on November 1989 the wall that was created to keep people from family and firends was dismantled.

    The Soviet Union breaks up into independent republics that ends the Cold War. This is due to the declaration of the Soviet Union that acknowledges the fifteen independent republics.
