Election of Abraham Lincoln
When Lincoln was elected many people were not happy, especially the south. They were afraid that Lincoln would Abolish slavery in the south. without the slaves to harvest their cotton, abolishing slavery would hurt their economy.In a desperate movement the southern states started to secede from the United States of America -
Secession of the States
The Southern states start to secede from the union because they believe that anything is better than Lincolns Laws.They were also afraid that Lincoln would Abolish slavery. The first State was South Carolina.The states that seceded came together and formed the Confederate States of America.

Civil War
The war started with the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter.
The war lasted for 4 years. Killing over 620,000 American citizens on American soil.The Union(the north) was fighting for Abolishing slavery, believing that it was not right to own other people. The Confederate(the south) believed that they were fighting for their freedom of the union and to keep their way of life and their slaves. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation it said that the Slaves in the Confederate or the Southern states were free. He was saying that he was freeing people that he did not directly controll. -
Freedmen's Bureau
This was a time where the Government wanted to help the newly freed slaves. the freedmen's bureau act states that the slaves get land, food, shelter, and education. -
The Reconstruction Era
Reconstruction started in 1865 and Lasted 10 years. This was when the country came back together. this was all Led by Lincoln in the beginning and then Andrew Johnson after him. -
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
Lincoln was shot in the head ar around 10 pm t a theater a few daysafter the war had ended. He was killed by John Wilkes Booth, a southerner. Lincoln Suffered for 9 hours after being shot -
Sharecropping
This is when a Land owner allows a Black tenant to rent some of their land to farm and produce crops.The land owner would then demand a portion of their crops in return for their shelter and use of the land. -
The 13th Amendment
This Amendment ratified in 1865 formally abolished slavery in the United states . in the amendment it says that nothing can stop a Man from being a citizen . Most of the Document was Formally Abolishing slavery forever. -
The 14th Amendment
This Amendment stated that " "all persons born or naturalized in the United States",could have citizenship. This includes the freed slaves. so now freed slaves born or brought to the us could hold citizenship in the United States of America. -
Radical Reconstruction
This was when the northern congressmen decided that it was time to mend the south. they sent workers to mend buildings, streets, bridges. They also sent soldiers to make sure that no fighting broke out and to also keep things moving. -
The 15th Amendment
This Amendment said that nothing, "race, color, or previous condition of servitude." could stop a man from voting.So now Any white or Black male could vote if he was citizen of the United States.If he was not a citizen then he could not vote. -
1st African American elected to Congress during Reconstruction.
On February 25, 1870, Hiram Rhodes Revels was seated as the first black member of the Senate, while Blanche Bruce, also of Mississippi, seated in 1875, was the second. Revels was the first black member of the Congress overall. -
Civil Rights Act of 1875
The original bill outlawed racial discrimination in juries, schools, transportation, and public accommodations.Black men, woman, and children could not be told that they could or could not do some thing. if a child wanted to be educated then no one could tell them that the child could not. this went for all black citizens for any situation.
