The Chinese Exclusiion Act

  • The Chinese Exclusion Act Was Apporved

    In the spring of 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act was approved and passed by congress. This Act excluded the Chinese and other Foreigners from entering into the united States
  • The Exclusion Expired

    The Exclusuion Act expired in 1892 but, congress extended it for 10 years in the form of the Geary Act. The Geary Act was basically the Exclusion act but under different terms and ideas.
  • Made Permanent

    Geary Act was an extension, but made permanent in 1902, adding restriction by requiring each chinese resident to register and obtain a cartificate of residence. Even if they had all correct paperwork and such, they could still be kicked out of the country.
  • The Geary Act

    The Geary Act regulated chinese immigration until the 1920's, with increased postwar imigration, congress adopted new means for regulation: quotas and requirements pertaining to national origin.
  • Naturalization

    in 1943 Congress repealed all the exclusion acts, givng foreighn born babies the right to seek naturalization.
  • Imigration Act

    Effective July 1, 1968, allowing a limit of 170,000 immigrants from outside the western hemishpere to enter the united states, with a maximum of 20,000 from any one country
