He finds a motel to stay at
This is important because he meets alot of people here and the readers learns alot about him.
  • He flirts with the 3 women at the club

He flirts with the 3 women at the club
At this point he feels like he is older and mature and can get with some ladies, but when he aproaches them they flirt back with him but in almost a mocking sence. They arent really taking him seriously which damages his self esteme.

    He gets beat up

So the woman comes and he just wants to talk to her and he pays her the 5 dollars but she asks for 10. He wont give it to her and she leaves then comes back with the elevator operator and he punches him in the stomach and she takes the money from his wallet and they leave.

    He meets the nuns
He meets the nuns and although he has never liked organized religion he enjoys how nice they are and gives them 10 dollars for charity he ends up regreting giving them the money but he still looks back on them later in the book with fond memories.
  • He goes on a date

    He goes on a date
He goes to a movie with this girl which is odd because he hates hollywood but they go and have an alright time then she wants to go ice skating so they get in a cab and start making out on the way over there then get there and start ice skating. They start talking and he gets upset with her very quickly and they part ways, which shows you that this charecter really is almost afraid of relationships and not just intimate ones but any kind of friendship.
  • He breaks the record he got for his sister

He breaks the record he got for his sister
He had just bought the jazz record Little Shirley Beans for his sister and the nhe broke it which I think is a big part of the book because one of the thing that Holden finds most important is inocence and childhood. And I think that the record sybolized just that so when he broke it he was saying hes done being a kid.
  • He goes to his old english teachers house

He goes to his old english teachers house
He goes to his old english teachers house knowing that he can stay the night there. WHen he gets there he can tell his old teacher has been drinking. The talk for a while and Holden gets a few odd signs from him that he might be homosexual but dissmisses them, then when he awakes he finds his old teacher stoking his hair. Which freaks him out because he has shown to be homophobic and so he runs out in a hurry. I think this shows taht he is just trying to find some reason to avoid relationships.
  • He sees with Phoebe again

    He sees with Phoebe again
Throughout the whole novel the only two poeple Holden really shows intrest in are Phoebe and Jane. So when he visits Phoebe it means alot to him. He also looks through her school supplies and is very happy to see that she is still a child and still has her inocence. Phoebe really is the world for him and Jane but he hadnt been able to work up the courage to talk to her so I htink that Phoebe might be the only one that keeps Holdens feet on the ground.
