    Montresor runs into Fortunato at the carnival drinking wine
    Montresor tells Fortunato he has bought a bottle of Amontillado and he would like for him to come and investigate it since he has much knowledge in fine wines. At this point though Fortunato is drunk and in no shape to be going anywhere but he insists that he will be the one to investigate the wine.

    On the way back to Montresor's house the two men continue to talk about the wine. Montresor is trying to convince Fortunato he is in no shape to be out inspecting wine. Montresor says that he will have Luchesi to examine it for him. This just makes Fortunato want to be the one to see the wine even more than before.

    As they arrive at Montresor's no one stirs about the house, it is empty. A look back in the story reveals maybe he wanted his servants to be gone when he tells all his servents not to leave the house, "Im just going out for a night on the town".

    As they enter the house Montresor continues to try to urge Fortunato to go back home and get his rest while he gets Luchesi to come and look at the wine.

    We should return said Montresor to Fortunato, you already have a cough. Enough! Said Montresor we will continue, it is not like a little cough will kill me. Indeed Montresor said, we shall continue.
