    Claudio Monteverdi

    Creator of Orfeo (Orpheus), the first opera which is varied in types of music (recitative, aria, etc.). Created "The Coronation of Poppea", the last opera he made at age 75. Was the music director at St. Mark's Cathedral for 30 years, until death. The "bridge between the 16th and 17th century." He brought the form pizzicato (plucking the violin strings) and tremolo (trembling). His music uses heavy word painting, as well as using the music to convey emotions.

    Francesca Caccini

    Francesca Caccini was one of the only women from 17th century Europe whose compositions were published. She was a court musician whose main purpose was to teach others from all levels of class to sing. Her piece "Il primo libro delle musiche" gave a good look at her methods. Her piece "La stiava" put her into the service of the Medici family, whose wealth made them essentially the rulers of Florence.

    Jean-Baptiste Lully

    Jean-Baptiste Lully was an Italian-born Frenchman whose fame brought him to become the musical composer to the king and the music master of the royal family. He received patents, and after 1674, no operas could be done without his permission. He made sacred compositions such as Misere, which became famous, alongside many operas which were stated to be "tragedies set to music" such as Atys or Isis.

    Arcangelo Corelli

    Considered "the most prominent Italian violinist and composer" around the 1700's. Took his playing and concentration to another level; his eyes would supposedly roll and turn red whenever he played the violin.
    Frequently made pieces for royalty, such as 12 Church Trio Sonatas for Two Violins and Archlute, with Organ Basso Continuo, Opus 3 for Francesco II (Duke of Modena) and the 12 Sonatas for Violin and Violone or Harpsichord, Opus 5 for Sophia Charlotte of Brandenburg

    Henry Purcell

    Nicknamed "The greatest of English composers".
    Created Dido and Aeneas, which is considered the best opera to be written to an English text, despite it being Purcell's only true opera. Was buried beneath the organ in Westminster Abbey
    Became a choirboy for the Chapel Royal when he was ten. Composed King Arthur for King Charles II's Restoration. After many complications, this piece failed initially, and was revised. Purcell received praise from his librettist, Dryden.

    Johann Sebastian Bach

    Bach was a composer dedicated to keyboard music, and was an excellent organist.
    composed the Brandenburg Concerto, a good representation of the concerto grosso form, and The Well-Tempered Clavier, which works as an exercise and a rite of passage for someone who wishes to play the piano.
    Bach is willing to go on insane trips to meet a goal, walking over 200 miles to go Lübeck,
