The American Revolution Timeline

  • The Beginning of Enlightenment

    This was a time of intellectual change and disestablished religion, replacing it with the thought of "pursiut of happiness."
  • The French and Indian War

    The French and Indian War
    The French and Indian War, was the first colonial war. England and France had an ongoing conflict with America which lead to a substancial increase in the colonies population.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    The French lost all their territory on the mainland of North Ameica, and the Brittish recieved Quebec and the Ohio Valley. The port of New Orleans and Louisiana, west of the Mississippi, were given to the Spanish for their aid to the Brittish.
  • The Sugar Act

    The colonial merhcants were supposed to pay a tax of six pence per gallon of imported mollases, but evaded the tax becuse of corruption. The Sugar Act reduced the amount of tax on molasses from six pence to three pence. It also, listed more good to be taxed such as some wines, pimiento ,coffee, etc.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act was rhe first real attempt to assert governmental authority over the colonists. Great Brittian was in great debt, and taxed English citizens as a result, leading them to almost revolt.
  • The Tea Act

    This act was not desined to add reveue to American colonies, but to boost the East India Company, which was hurt financially due to the eighteen million punds of unsold tea. Colonists refsed to let ships unload at docks and harbors. This lead to The Boston Tea Party.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    Although the tax on tea decreased, the colonists decided to boycott tea due to taxation without representation. Leading this boycott, were the women, who were the primary tea drinkers. The colonists got fed up and dumbed all the tea overboard.
  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    Battle of Lexington and Concord
    General Gage planned to send soldiers to Lexington. There they would capture Colonial leader Sam Adams and John Hancock and later Concord, where they would seige gunpowder. However, spies leaked the plan of the attack, and two lanters were lit and hung on Boston's North Church to warn the countryside that the Brittish on their way to attack.
  • Second Continental Congress

    Second Continental Congress
    The congress men met in Philadelphia because of the Battle of Lexington and Concord to figure out what to do next. They elected George Washington as Commander and Cheif of the Continential Army.
  • Thomas Paine Publishes Common Sense

    Thomas Paine Publishes Common Sense
    Written and the published in 1776, Common Sense challenged the Brittish government and royal monarchy's authority. It's languange was basic and could speak to everyday people. It was the first to ask for the publics opinion.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence
    On July 4, Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence. It embodies the following: All men are created free and equal and possess the same inherent, natural rights. Within the Declaration of Independence, there's the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
  • Valley Forge

    Valley Forge
    There wasnt a battle fought at Valley Forge, but it was a turning point for the Revolutionary War. The Continental Army almost disbanded, due to weather conditions, hunger, disease, and death, but didnt when the weather somewhat began to let up/
  • Shay's Rebellion

    Shay's Rebellion
    The Shay's Rebellion was a seripus of protest from farmers on local ans state enforcement. They also protested against tax collections and judgments for debts.
  • Constitutional Convention

    Constitutional Convention
    Among the first order of buisness, was election Geroge Washington, and including complete secrecy concerning its deliberations--that would guide the proceedings. The real convention happened days later, with the Virgina Plan.
