Cells2

The Advancement of Cell Theory Throughout History

  • Robert Hooke

    Robert Hooke
Robert Hooke, discovered and named the cell. After taking a piece of cork and studying it under a microscope, he discovered the rectangular uniform shapes and originally named them pores. But, Robert Hooke was a monk, and the "pores" reminded him of the cells that monks lived in and he renamed them cells.
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek

    Anton van Leeuwenhoek
Anton van Leeuwenhoek, discovered bacteria, "animacules", and improved the magnification abilities of the microscope, by polishing lenses. He dicovered bacteria from a sample of his saliva, which he looked at through his own version of the microscope.
  • Hentri Dutrochet

    Hentri Dutrochet
Henri Dutrochet discovered that all the functions of an organism are carried out through cells. He also discovered osmosis and made a tool to measure osmotic pressure within cells
  • Felix Dujardin

    Felix Dujardin
Felix Dujardin discovered the one-celled organisms protozoan. He also did research in different types of parasites. He was mostly self-educated, and was appointed professor of botany and zoology. He observed the substance exuded from cells and named it sarcode also known as protoplasm.
  • Matthias Schleiden

    Matthias Schleiden
Matthias Schleiden discovered that all plants are made of cells.(he did not discover that animals were made of cells). He disliked the focus on classification in his peers, and preferred to stude the sturcture of plants under microscopes.
  • Theodore Schwann

    Theodore Schwann
Theodore Schwann discovered that all animals were made of cells.(he did not discover that plants were made of cells)
  • Rudolf Virchow

    Rudolf Virchow
Rudolf Virchow built upon the work of Theodore Schwann, which aided him in the discovery that all cells come from pre-existing cells.
