Ten Discoveries in Chemistry

  • Discovery of Oxygen

Joseph Presley discovered oxygen by a series of tests. However, Antoine Lavosier invented it by naming it. The invention of oxygen led to the invention of cell phones, technology, plastic etc. Joseph Presley invented oxygen by melting mercury and catching the gas that was released into a see through container. Allowing Joseph Presley to observe the results.
  • The discovery of Atomic Weights

John Dalton discovered what he called, "the relative weights of ultimate particles." Which helped define the relationship between atoms and elements. He labeled how much each element weighs; which also helped future discoveries of atoms combining into molecules.
  • Discovery of Urea inorganically

Friedrich Wohler discovered he could form urea without any organisms. He made it out of fully inorganic substances and was fully artificial. Also discovered that atoms from organic or inorganic substances can be the same; they still contain atoms.
  • Discovery of the ring shape formula

August Kekule discovered that benzene couldn't be written out in a straight chain. However, he discovered that if the formula is written in a ring like shape, would the valence electron regulation be followed? Which it was. It was filled of carbon atoms with hydrogen atoms connected to it. Also including alternating single and double bonds. The ring shape formula has helped form millions of compounds that could be used to benefit us.
  • Discovery of electricity reacting with chemicals

Humphrey Davey discovered that electricity and chemicals can transform into something new, something greater. Helped form: solar panels, LED displays, and rechargeable lithium batteries.
  • Discovery of molecules

Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac and Amadeo Avogadro: discovered that gases were made of multiple atoms called molecules. After realizing that atoms can be placed together in compounds to form/make something new, discoveries were a lot easier. Newer things were forming with these compounds.
  • The discovery of the periodic table

Dmitri Mendeleev discovered the periodic table. He created the structure in which each element has a spot to fill. And discovered that the elements he had helped him discover three more elements: Scrontium, Gallium, and Germanium.
  • Discovery of the first sub atomic particles

Joseph Thompson discovered the first sub atomic particles called electrons. Ernest Rutherford discovered that protons were located in a nucleus a hundred thousand times smaller than the atom itself. Electrons are known as radiant matter, because magnets can affect the way electrons bend.
  • Discovery of element identifiers

Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff discovered 2 new elements: cesium and rubidium. Also discovered that there was sodium in the sun. You could identify what element is present by observing the color of the fire. Each element has a different effect to the fire and makes it burn a different color.
  • Discovery of the atom structure

Newton Lewis discovered that atoms have shells. And each shell has a specific amount of electrons that cold be shared with other atoms. The bonding of valence electrons help form new substances such as; sodium chloride. The idea of combining compounds or bonding has allowed the formation of medicine and so forth.
